Cook Shire Youth Council

Are you aged 12 – 23 years of age, living in Cook Shire and interested in youth-related topics? Then Cook Shire Council is looking for you! Cook Shire Council is currently looking for dedicated, passionate and enthusiastic young people, aged 12 – 23 years, to become members of the inaugural Cook Shire Youth Council in 2021.

What is the Cook Shire Youth Council Program?

The Cook Shire Youth Council will develop ‘youth-led’ projects and campaigns, and advocate for young people who live, work, study or volunteer in the Cook region. The Youth Council will also function as an advisory committee to Council by:

  • Providing a means for young people to engage with people, gather feedback, and suggest innovations to Cook Shire Council, other levels of government, and the community;
  • Identifying key issues relating to young people in Cook Shire and actively participating in the development of strategies to address these;
  • Raising the profile of young people in Cook Shire and promoting their contribution to community life;
  • Maintaining inclusive and representative membership of the Youth Council, which encourages and supports the participation of young people with a broad range of life experiences and future aspirations; and
  • Providing the opportunity for young people to experience civic decision-making processes and supporting their own active participation in these processes.

What are the benefits of being involved?

Youth Council participants will develop skills in areas such as advocacy, project management, cultural competency, media and communications, and have other unique opportunities to develop their leadership skills.

  • Play a role in improving life for young people in Cook Shire
  • The chance to work with key decision-makers in the community
  • Engaging with and networking with other like-minded young people
  • Having fun and enjoying the challenge!
