Events and Celebrations

We love a good excuse to celebrate!

Cook Shire Council run and participate in various celebrations and awards ceremonies. Check out some of the biggest annual events in Cook Shire, see how you can be involved, and make sure to read the Event Information Kit if you are planning your own event in the Shire.

Event Information Kit

The Event Information Kit has been designed to assist and support organisations, individuals and community groups who are planning events in Cook Shire. The kit consolidates all of Council's requirements and procedures for events, including what licences, approvals or bookings may be required.

Cooktown Discovery Festival

The Cooktown Discovery Festival is one of Cook Shire's most popular and long standing events, with the highlight being the re-enactment of Captain James Cook's arrival on the banks of the Endeavour River in 1770 and the interaction between the Europeans and the First Nations people.

Light Up Cook Shire Competition

Spread the joy of Christmas, with a chance to win some great prizes, with the Light Up Cook Shire Christmas lights competition.

Watch this space later in the year for more information on the 2018 Light Up Cook Shire Christmas lights competition.

Breakfast With Santa

Each year in December Cook Shire holds a free breakfast at the Cooktown Pool, with a special visit from Santa and a present for all the children attending.

Australia Day

Australia Day is an annual favourite with a regular attendance of around 150 locals who help us acknowledge and celebrate our outstanding citizens and be reminded of all the reasons why being an Aussie is so great.

Australian Citizenship

Many residents become Australian citizens through Citizenship ceremonies conducted by Cook Shire Council. We ensure your citizenship ceremony is a meaningful and special experience for you and your friends and family.
