Events and Celebrations

We love a good excuse to celebrate!

Cook Shire Council run and participate in various celebrations and awards ceremonies. Check out some of the biggest annual events in Cook Shire, see how you can be involved, and make sure to read the Event Information Kit if you are planning your own event in the Shire.

Australia Day

Australia Day is an annual favourite with a regular attendance of locals who help us acknowledge and celebrate our outstanding citizens and be reminded of all the reasons why being an Aussie is so great.

Cooktown and Cape York Expo 2021 and Discovery Festival

The Cooktown Discovery Festival is one of Cook Shire's most popular and long standing events, with the highlight being the re-enactment of Captain James Cook's arrival on the banks of the Endeavour River in 1770 and the interaction between the Europeans and the First Nations people. In 2021, the Discovery Festival will be incorporated into an exciting 10 day program as part of the Cooktown and Cape York Expo 2021 event.

Australian Citizenship

Many residents become Australian citizens through Citizenship ceremonies conducted by Cook Shire Council. We ensure your citizenship ceremony is a meaningful and special experience for you and your friends and family.
