Rossville is a unique community, situated on the edge of the rainforest in a World Heritage area under protection and umbrella of the Wet Tropics. It hosts a wide range of wildlife, including 27 species of Bat, Tree Kangaroos, Platypus, Turtles, Black Bream, Jungle Perch, Stripeys, Jew Fish, frogs, green tree snakes, sugar gliders, many species of butterfly, including the Cairns Birdwing and the beautiful blue Ulysses.
The landscape is lushly forested with a broad range of flora. From rich rainforest with a vast array of palms, orchids, native grasses to dry forest species, including Grevillea Melaleuca. Rossville is set across foothills and valleys between two mountain ranges, divided by the Wallaby creek and many other waterways. Fresh water plays a major part in the life style of the local people. Rossville has a high annual rainfall and serves as the water catachment zone for the Cooktown's water supply.
Notably, Rossville used to be a tin mining centre. The aboriginals were chased away and the land raped. Once tin prices dropped, however, people moved away. Many of the buildings, including the pubs, were moved far away. Currently, Rossville is a small community of about 200 people and is inhabited by a wide variety of people, including artists and hermits. There has been a new sports recreation area designated as well and there are markets every second Saturday from 9 am til mid-day.
