MEDIA RELEASE | Photography exhibition to share stories of When Disaster Strikes
Community members from Cook Shire and Wujal Wujal are being invited to share their stories of disaster by submitting photographs that capture their personal experiences of what has happened when disaster has struck.
16 April 2021 - 04:22PM
The photos will then be featured at an exhibition called When Disaster Strikes that will tour through Cook Shire and Wujal Wujal during May and June and create an opportunity for residents to discuss their disaster experiences, share their stories and connect with others who’ve had similar experiences.
“This exhibition will be about sharing personal photos that tell a story. It could be one of devastation or disbelief; heartbreak or humanity. There’s also often moments of beauty amidst the chaos. We want to see and share them all,” said Community Development Officer, Kathrina Southwell who is jointly-employed by Cook Shire Council, Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council and Douglas Shire Council, to work with communities effected by disaster.
"From amateur mobile phone photographers to seasoned professionals, all ages and skill levels are encouraged to submit their photos,” added Ms. Southwell.
The exhibition will also provide an opportunity for visitors to the area to learn about the nature of life across Cape York, as well as help them prepare for some of the possible dangers they need to consider when travelling through the region.
Photos must be submitted via the online portal. Submissions close at 5 pm Tuesday 20 April 2021.
This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments Community Development Program.
For information or if you would like to be involved in hosting the exhibition in your town or venue, please contact Kathrina Southwell on ksouthwell@cook.qld.gov.au, or by phoning 4082 0500.
