Community, Culture and Country - Cape Artists invited to celebrate their Community through art

Artists and communities from across the Cape are being invited to submit design concepts that represent their community for a chance to have their work featured at the Gateway to Cape York Sculptural Park in Lakeland.

Submissions are welcomed from art centres, schools, individuals and community groups, from 16 communities including, Wujal Wujal, Cooktown, Lockhart River, Port Stewart, Coen, Iron range, Bamaga, Pajinka, Mapoon, Weipa, Napranum, Aurukun, Pormpuraaw, Kowanyama, Hope Vale and Laura.

A simple drawing is all that’s required for the submission. A panel from each community will then select the concept that best embodies the unique identity of their community to be constructed and installed at the sculptural park. The successful artists will work with a professional sculptural artist and fabricator to see their concept come to life and be awarded $500 for their design.

Artists are being asked to consider the ‘Thoughtful Traveller’ message that is promoted at the Gateway to Cape York information hub, and are encouraged to consider using recycled, repurposed and natural materials in their designs.

“There is a richness in the diversity of cultures, country and communities across the Cape,” said Cook Shire Mayor, Peter Scott.

“Conserving and preserving the land and the stories that define each community is what connects us all. The sculptural park at the Gateway to Cape York is a fantastic project that will promote these messages through art to tourists and visitors to the Cape.”

Submissions must close 17 June 2021. Artists can submit their concepts either via the online portal or by returning them to Cook Shire Council in person to 10 Furneaux Street, Cooktown or by post to PO Box 3, Cooktown, QLD 4895.

The Sculptural Park forms the second phase of the larger Gateway to the Cape project which is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions program and Cook Shire Council.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the Building our Regions program continues to improve the liveability and economic conditions for regional Queensland.

“This program is creating jobs and various flow-on opportunities by boosting industry, supporting tourism and enabling greater connectivity,” Ms Lui said.

“The Gateway to the Cape project is going to be an important piece of tourism infrastructure for Cape York Peninsula and it’s great to support local artists through the Sculpture Park.”
