UPDATE | LION'S PARK PLAYGROUND

Following more than six months of ongoing redesign, re-certification and supply chain delays, works to complete the upgrade Cooktown’s much-loved Lion’s Park Playgrounds are underway.

The project includes replacement of the current playground equipment with brand new equipment, a fenced play enclosure featuring a soft-fall safety surface and installation of a new roof structure to provide much-needed shade and an all-weather play area.

Council responded to community feedback on the original shade structure through a process that has resulted in a design that complies with heritage overlay and extreme weather considerations, while minimising impact to the natural outlook of the area.

“We are incredibly proud of the work that’s gone into making the Lion’s Park a facility that the whole community has contributed to and will be able to enjoy for years to come,” said Mayor Peter Scott.

“But in order to ensure we get it right, the redesign and re-certification process, combined with nation-wide supply chain delays for building materials, followed by the holiday shut-down period has resulted in unprecedented and unanticipated delays.

“What’s important now is that we have a commitment from Council teams and our contractors that – weather pending – they are doing everything in their power to accelerate the construction, moving ahead as quickly as possible.

“We would like to take this opportunity to whole-heartedly thank the community for your passion for this project and your patience as we’ve worked through these challenges.

The Lion’s Park Playground Upgrade project is an initiative of the Queensland Government and Cook Shire Council.
