COUNCIL WELCOMES TWO NEW AUSSIES TO THE SHIRE

Council welcomed two new citizens to our community at a citizenship ceremony held at Council Chambers on Tuesday 26 July 2022.

Cook Shire Welcomes Amanda Carvalho and Khubaib Khan as new Australia Citizens

Amanda Carvalho and Khubaib Khan (pictured above) made their public commitment to Australia and accepted the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship in front of Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott, Councillors, Council’s Executive Leadership team and community members.

Mr. Khan, originally from Pakistan, who is also a valued member of Council’s Engineering and Infrastructure team said he'd felt a nervous excitement ahead of the ceremony.

"It really cannot be truly expressed in words," said Mr. Khan. "There are so many emotions. It is such an honour to officially be called an Australian. I am very excited for the future and I look forward to doing my part and contributing to the community."

Cook Shire has already officially welcomed 15 new citizens to our community this year at events held at a number of locations across the Shire including Grassy Hill and Council Chambers. While Council hosts citizenship ceremonies all year round and in a variety of different locations, many new citizens opt to take their pledges as part of Council’s Australia Day celebrations on 26 January.

To enquire about becoming a citizen please visit the Department of Home Affairs.  Then, once your citizenship has been approved, a Council representative will contact you to arrange for you to take your Pledge of Commitment.
