Councillor Marilyn Morris

I was born and raised on a farming property in Cook Shire and attended Cooktown State School, followed by three years at boarding school in Brisbane. My teenage and early adult years were spent between Cooktown and Brisbane working in tourism and aged care.

Being a passionate advocate for community fundraising, I represented the Far North twice, raising money for Handicapped Children and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. An organised event in the 1980s drew support from all in the area with everybody helping set up and clean up. Together we raised an amazing $25,000 – a tribute to teamwork.

I moved to Western Australia in 1993 and lived in the central wheatbelt with my husband, working on wheat and sheep properties and bringing up two daughters. I continued working part-time in aged care and studied mental health.

In 2001 we relocated to the Northern Territory and purchased 100 acres in Coomalie Shire. I completely immersed myself in this small community – working at the Indigenous Institute, the Post Office, then Coomalie Council while coordinating the Lingalonga Festival.

My hometown drew me back and I visited the farm with my daughters every year while away until my return in 2016.
