As at  5 August 2014 - DRIVE ACCORDING TO CURRENT ROAD CONDITIONS, these change constantly on dirt roads.  SLOW DOWN and TAKE CARE, particularly when roads are wet.

 

LAKEFIELD ROAD and MT WEBB / WAKOOKA ROAD are OPEN.  Some areas are still rough as road works are ongoing, high clearance 4WD vehicles recommended - drive according to road conditions.
BATTLE CAMP ROAD is OPEN to all traffic.  Take care at river crossings and when coming off bitumen sections, particularly if towing a trailer- drive according to road conditions.
Bloomfield Road is OPEN to all traffic.   This is from the Mulligan Highway as far as Wujal Wujal.  The Bloomfield River crossing and the road to the south is the responsibility of the Douglas Shire Council. 
Mein/Batavia, Sudley/Batavia, Moreton/Bramwell Bamaga/Telegraph & Bamaga Roads are OPEN - high clearance 4WD vehicles recommended - drive according to road conditions.
Musgrave/Strathgordon Road to Pormpuraaw is OPEN. 
Orchid Creek Road is OPEN.
Port Stewart Road is OPEN.
 Birthday Mtn Road is OPEN to high clearance 4WD vehicles with 5 tonne limit. 
Rokeby Road through  Mungkan Kandju National Park is OPEN to high clearance 4WD vehicles - as from 1 July 2014.   Council does not maintain the entire road.
Holroyd Road OPEN - high clearance 4WD vehicles recommended.
Palmerville Road to Kimba Road intersection (from Fairview Outstation turnoff) is OPEN to high clearance 4WD vehicles.  Palmerville Road  past Fairlight Station is OPEN with care to 5 tonne 4WD high clearance - There are gates around Palmerville Station - if gates are shut please ensure you close these gates after passing through.  These gates should NOT BE LOCKED.  If you find locks on these gates - please photograph and advise Council.   The chains on the gates are tight but not should not be LOCKED.
Kimba Road is OPEN to Kimba - high clearance 4WD vehciles.
Palmerville Station across to Maytown is OPEN to large 4WD vehicles with 5 tonne limit.
Whites Creek Road is OPEN from Mulligan Highway to Maytown to high clearance 4WD vehciles only and subject to a 10 tonne limit. 
Portland Roads Road & Iron Range Road are OPEN with care,  high clearance 4WD vehicles recommended and subject to a 44 tonne GVM limit.
 Marina Plains Road OPEN.

Road conditions change quickly when roads are wet and can become very slippery. Slow down, pot holes and corrugations increase following wet weather, drive according to prevailing road conditions.
SLOW DOWN when coming off a bitumen road onto a dirt road and at creek/river crossings. Fatalities have occurred with vehicles losing control when travelling too fast, particularly smaller vehicles or vehicles towing trailers or vans.
Do not disobey 'ROAD CLOSED' signs as you void all insurances in the event of an accident. You can also be fined by Queensland Police Service and lose points off your licence. Heavy vehicles are also liable for any damage caused to the roadway.

GRASSY HILL - Not suitable for caravans or RVs - bitumen surface, but very steep and narrow in parts. COACHES - 7 metres is maximum length for coaches (usually 22 seaters), otherwise there is not enough room to turn around.

Bloomfield River Crossing - subject to flooding. High clearance 4WD vehicles recommended.  If water levels ar high on the crossing - DO NOT CROSS.  Bridge works underway on Bloomfield Crossing.

Road Name: ROSSVILLE-BLOOMFIELD ROAD - (Cook Shire road) however the road from the Mulligan Highway turnoff to Shipton Flat Road is the responsibility of Dept of Transport and Main Roads in Cairns.
Current Status:

OPEN - High clearance 4WD vehicles recommended during the wet season.

General Description: Bitumen and dirt road. Can be slippery when wet. Rough surface with boggy sections and potholes. Slow down on corner sections.  Mainly dirt road can be slippery when wet.

General Description: Dirt road - because of the isolation of this area, you are advised to ensure others know your espected date of return.
Road Status:

OPEN - this road is a 4WD "Adventure Track" for experienced 4WD drivers only. It is mandatory for any persons embarking on this road to carry with them self-sufficient recovery gear and means of communication to outside emergency services (have Satelite phone, VHF radio phone), as well as first aid equipment; safety equipment and extra supplies.  It is anticipated this road will open 18 July 2014.  Please advise family, friends or police of your expected return date.  Please note  QPWS have advised that the Cape Melville NP will be closed from 30 July to 2 August 2014 inclusive to allow feral animal control shoot and aerial incendiary - please contact QPWS on 07 4069 5777 for enquiries relating to this.
