CRAZY HAIR DAY - THIS FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 8
Cook Shire Council is holding a “Crazy Hair Day” to raise money for the Queensland Cancer Fund. All funds raised will go towards assisting travel for cancer patients and people in remission. Council is pleased to advise that the Rate Notices for the period 1st July 2006 to 31st December 2006, together with Excess Water Notices (if applicable) for the period 01-07-05 to 30-06-2006 were mailed on 1st August 2006. Discount will close on 7th September 2006. Free Trees – Still Available
Two trees are available to ratepayers who produce this current rate notice (ie 1/7/2006 to 31/12/2006) to Parks and Gardens at the Cooktown Botanical Gardens.
Please collect on Thursday mornings ONLY between 8 am and 12 noon. Prior to attending at Parks and Gardens, please choose which two trees you wish to select from a brochure at the library, Council's office or from www.cooktowns.com.

Draft Cook Shire Pest Management Plan 2006-2010 - PUBLIC CONSULTATION
A new Draft Pest Management Plan has been developed for Cook Shire to cover the period 2006-2010 and has been released for public comment.
The Draft Plan can be viewed or downloaded from www.cooktowns.com or www.cyppests.com
Hard copies are available for viewing at Council’s Main Office in Charlotte Street.
If you wish to have a hard copy or CD of the Draft Pest Management Plan mailed to you, please contact the Cape York Weeds and Feral Animal Program on (07) 40695020.

Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002 – Section 242
Public Notice – Notice of Pest Survey Program
Notice is hereby given under Section 242 of the Land Protection (Pest and Stock
Route Management) Act 2002 (“the Act”), that the Cook Shire Council will be conducting a pest survey program to monitor compliance with the requirements of the Act in relation to declared pests.
The purpose and scope of the program is
• To monitor compliance with the Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002 in relation to declared pests.
• To aid in monitoring/mapping the distribution and spread of declared pests.
• To assist in the enhancement of community awareness in relation to declared pests.
To be conducted in the whole of the Local Government Area (Cook Shire).
The program will include both aerial and on-ground surveys.
The pest survey program will commence on the 8th September 2006, and continue for a period of 12 months, concluding on 7th September 2007.
A copy of the pest survey program is available for inspection at the Cook Shire Council office at Charlotte Street, Cooktown.
A copy may be obtained from the Cook Shire office during the period of the program.

Learn to Swim – Expressions of Interest
Council is pleased to announce that it will be running two programs of Learn to Swim classes – babies, toddlers and children’s classes will be available. Program 1 starts October 7, 2006. Program 2 starts February 3, 2007. The program will be run over 9 weeks. Lessons will be half an hour long and run every Saturday. Registration is essential. Please contact the Pool on (07) 4069 6928 to register your interest or for any enquiries. Information on Swimming Coaching/ Tadpoles/ Tree Frogs will be available soon.

Silk Christmas Banner Workshops - Expressions of Interest
The Christmas in Cooktown Group has been successful in obtaining a RADF grant to hold FREE community workshops to make Silk Christmas Street Banners.
Local artist Waratah Nicholls will be holding the workshops over two weekends in October, at the CCAA building (Old Railway Station),
Saturday 7th October - 1pm - 4.30pm
Sunday 8th October - 10am - 4pm (please bring your own lunch)
Saturday 14th October - 1pm - 4.30pm
Sunday 15th October 10am - 4pm (please bring your own lunch)
Materials will be supplied.
These banners will be then proudly displayed on the street light posts in Charlotte Street for the Christmas period each year.
This is truly a community project and we would like to invite people of all ages to attend, but spaces will be limited so please ensure you get in early.

Quotes are required for the external painting of the Lakeland Community Hall. Painting will comply with Councils standard painting specification and where applicable, the Australian Standard AS/NZS 2311:2000 Guide to the painting of buildings.

Stabilisation & Repair of Slips on Rossville – Bloomfield Rd via Ayton
Tenders are invited and will close at 2:00pm on Wednesday October 4, 2006, for the carrying out of the following works:- Stabilisation & repair of roadway embankment slips on the Rossville – Bloomfield Rd approximately 3 kms south of Ayton.
The works consist of approximately 550 metres of gabion walls, generally 4 metres high and 330 metres of soil nail reinforcement. These works are to be installed under traffic.
The lowest or any tender not necessarily accepted.
