The Bushfire Mitigation Programme
27/06/2007

The Bushfire Mitigation Programme

The Bushfire Mitigation Programme has operated successfully for three years since its inception in 2004-05 by assisting local communities to better prepare for bushfires. Building on the success of the initial funding, on 27th April 2007, the Prime Minister extended the Bushfire Mitigation Programme for another four years to 30th June 2011.

The Australian Government will provide $20 million nationally to the programme, over this period, with $5 million available each year. Funds will continue to be available to support the construction, maintenance and signage of fire trails, and related activities that contribute to safer, sustainable communities better able to withstand the effects of fire.

Funding will also be able to be allocated to eligible Local Government bushfire trail activities, with costs to be shared on a one third each basis between the Australian, State and Local Governments.

Each State and Territory has been allocated a notional proportion of the $5 million available annually, and applications are invited for 2007-08 with a closing date of 31st July 2007. As funds are limited, applications for funding will be assessed on a competitive basis.

For further information on specific application and assessment processes applicable to your State, please contact the relevant lead agency. The contact details of these agencies is available at http://www.dotars.gov.au/disasters/bmp/index.aspx
