RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP

Pets and domestic animals can be much-loved members of your household but can also be the cause of unhappy neighbourhoods. As an animal owner you are responsible for caring for your pets and ensuring you comply with relevant Local Laws. This section provides information on responsible pet ownership and what you can do if you have a complaint.

Full details of State and Council rules governing pet ownership are available in:

LOST AND FOUND ANIMALS

Council conducts regular patrols. Owners of animals found wandering may be issued infringement notices ($260) and be liable for associated impound fees.

REGISTRATION

The Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 requires all dogs within the Cook local government area to be registered. Exemptions apply for working dogs. Registered dogs are required to display their current registration tag at all times, this will help ensure a speedy return if your animal is found wandering. MICROCHIPPING

Under Queensland Government legislation, animals born after April 2009 must be microchipped.

A microchip is a small electronic identification tag that is inserted by a needle just under the skin between your pets shoulder blades. The procedure is quick, safe and easy and side effects are very uncommon. The microchip is implanted permanently, making it much more reliable than a tag on the collar of your pet.

If your pet ever goes missing and ends up at an animal management facility or vet, it will be scanned with a microchip reader to check for a microchip. The microchip contains a 15 digit unique identification number that is linked to the owner, through an online microchip registry. The microchip registry safely stores your address and contact details so that your pet can be returned to you.

If you move or change your phone number, make sure you update your details with the online registry. To find out where your pets microchip details are lodged, and to change your details, click here.

Council offers microchipping for only $33 per eligible pet. Bookings are essential. Please call 4082 0500 to book
