e-recycling

Most of your used electronic items can be recycled. If you are unsure, check the following list of recyclable e-waste.

Printer cartridges Printer cartridges are collected as part of the Planet Ark Close the Loop Program. They are free to dispose of at Council's main office
Hand held batteries All D, C, AA, AAA, AAAA etcetera are sent to Cairns Battery World for recycling. Batteries can be disposed of for free at any waste facilities, IGA supermarkets in Ayton and Cooktown, Shire libraries and the Council main office
Mobile phones Mobiles are recycled through the Australian Recycling Program for free. Mobile phone are refurbished where possible and given to Planet Ark for a second lease on life. If they can't be refurbished, 96 per cent of a phone is recyclable. Recycling just 50,000 handsets can save the need to mine 110 tonnes of gold ore, 213 tonnes of silver bearing ore or 11 tonnes of copper sulphide ore. Phones can be dropped off at any Shire waste facilities or Council's main office.
E-waste All other e -waste, such as televisions, computers, printers and computer accessories, are recycled as part of the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme. Council sends all its e-waste to E-Waste Recycling Australia. All of these items are free to dump.
Small electronic items Small electronic items, such as vacuums, speakers, blenders, mixers etcetera, are disposed of with general waste. Fees will apply.
