On the Mulligan Highway, 21 km from Cooktown, a new lookout was opened recently and gives a spectacular view over a valley of giant granite boulders. The black on the boulders is from a blue-green algae.
These mountains are sacred to the Aboriginal people in the region. Numerous people have disappeared from here, never to be seen again. The large white sections that can be seen is where some of the boulders have exploded in the extreme heat.
Highly specialised animals and plants live among the boulders. Some species, like the Black Mountain frog are found nowhere else in the world.
