Quarantine Bay is a unique beach, covered with a vast array of pebbles and shells. It is a popular beach for fishing and for swimming, as the waters are warm and shallow. The drive to the beach passes the turn off to the Cooktown Golf Club. Going from Cooktown to Cairns on Hope Street, make a left onto Quarantine Bay Road. From there it is 4.7 kms to the beach.
The name Quarantine Beach is thought to have originated from the fact that this area was used as a quarantine section for ships passengers with diseases. During the gold rush many ships from overseas arrived in Cooktown as their first port of call in Australia.
