One of Cooktown's simple pleasures can be found fishing with the locals at the Wharf.
One of the unique features of fishing in Cooktown is that large Spanish Mackeral, Barramundi, Queenfish, Trevally and Mangrove Jack can be caught just by walking onto the public wharf and throwing in a line. So if you don't feel like hiring a boat, you have an excellent chance of making a major catch whilst still being within walking distance of your accommodation.
Regular sightings of huge gropers will delight the visitor, but be warned, they are probably after your catch! Remember they are protected and should never be targeted.
Tinnies for hire can be found at the Wharf, together with marine fuel supplies, bait and ice. There is an excellent boat ramp and surrounding area for dinghies, and a floating pontoon allows easy access to shore.
Water for boats is available at the Council Public Wharf, with rubbish bins, public showers, toilets and even a laundromat nearby.
