Follow these simple safety tips to ensure your visit to Cooktown is as enjoyable as possible.
-
Read and obey signs, for example, at waterways or on roads.
-
Drive on the left hand side of the road and obey the speed limit.
-
Always wear your seatbelt.
-
Don’t drink alcohol and drive.
-
Be aware of the dangers of driving long distances and fatigue. Plan your journey and share the driving with someone else.
-
-
When at the beach, swim between the red and yellow flags. Lifesavers and lifeguards patrol these areas for your safety.
-
Going diving or snorkelling? Make sure you are fit to dive. You must tell your dive supervisor if you have a medical condition, can’t swim or have never dived or snorkelled before.
-
When diving or snorkelling ALWAYS speak to the supervisor if you have any concerns, follow the supervisor’s instructions, and stay close to the supervisor and your dive buddy.
-
The sun is strong in Australia – drink plenty of water regularly and protect your skin from burning. Seek shade when outside, cover up with clothing and wear a sun protective hat, sunglasses and SPF 30+ sunscreen.
-
Before you light a campfire, check that fires are not banned in the area.
-
Campfires should be extinguished by using water – not sand or dirt.
-
If travelling alone, tell people (such as your friends, accommodation provider or the local police) of your plans.
-
Use accredited Visitor Information Centres (yellow i signs) for local and regional information, including local safety issues.
-
Jellyfish and Crocodiles are prominant in the area. Always take some vinegar with you when going near the salt water, to treat jellyfish stings. Beware crocodiles, don't camp or allow children to play close to the waters edge, particually near deep/ murky water.
-
Keep your belongings secure at all times.
-
Trust your instincts, be aware of your personal safety and surroundings.
-
Dial 000 or 112 from a mobile in the event of an emergency.

Please be careful on the roads driving to Cooktown.
Look out for cattle crossing - much of the road, although sealed, is unfenced.
