Community invited to Meet Cook Shire Candidates

As the March local government elections draw near, Cook Shire Council, in collaboration with the Cooktown Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, extends an invitation to the community to meet their local candidates at a special event being held at Cooktown PCYC Events Centre and livestreamed across the Shire on Saturday 2 March 2024, from 11am.

The ”Meet Your Local Candidates” event underscores Council's dedication to fostering community participation and providing constituents with invaluable opportunities to acquaint themselves with the individuals vying for their representation. It serves as a platform for candidates to present themselves, share their visions for the community, and engage directly with voters on the issues that matter most.

Mayor Peter Scott expressed his delight at the number of nominations received for the upcoming election, stating, "We are thrilled to see such a diverse and high-calibre group of community members stepping forward to serve their fellow residents. This level of interest demonstrates a strong commitment to our community's welfare and future prosperity."

Russell Bowman, President of the Cooktown Chamber of Commerce and Tourism echoed these sentiments, stating that “It’s encouraging to see a good range of mayoral and councillor candidates from all walks of life, who are willing to commit their next four years to the leadership of Cook Shire Council.”

“The Chamber is pleased to be supporting this event. It’s a great opportunity for voters to get to know more about the candidates and what their aspirations are for the Council and for each of the Shire communities” added Mr Bowman.

The "Meet Your Local Candidates" event aims to be inclusive and transparent, providing residents with the chance to interact directly with candidates from various backgrounds and perspectives. Whether attending in person or joining the livestream, voters will have the opportunity to gain insight into each candidate's platform.

"Our goal is to facilitate an open and respectful arena that allows voters to make informed decisions based on the merits of each candidate's ideas and qualifications,” said Mayor Scott, adding that “This event is about empowering our community to actively participate in the democratic process. By engaging with the candidates and understanding their perspectives, voters play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of our community.”

All residents of Cook Shire are encouraged to attend or tune in to the livestream of the "Meet Your Local Candidate" event.
