Cook Shire Celebrates 10 Years of the Cooktown Events Centre
03 August 2022 - 09:31AM
On Friday 23 July 2021, Cook Shire Council, PCYC Queensland, community members and distinguished guests came together to officially celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Cooktown Events Centre.
Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott welcomed the crowd and reflected on how central to the vitality, health, wellness and safety of the community the Events Centre has become over the last decade, as both a place of celebration, arts, culture, sport and recreation, but also as a cyclone shelter and place of refuge during weather events.
Mayor Scott also welcomed the CEO of Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) Mr Brendan Moon, to the festivities and had the pleasure of announcing that Cook Shire has been approved to receive $385,000 in funding from the Queensland Government through the 2020-21 Queensland Resilience and Risk Reduction Fund to increase the resilience of the Events Centre. The crucial funds will be used towards upgrades to the integrity of the power supply, air-conditioning and ventilation systems, improved cold storage for food, medication and other essential supplies, and new equipment to increase the capacity of the venue during a disaster event.
The anniversary celebrations also included a Welcome to Country from Gugu Ymithirr Traditional Owners, Erica Deeral and Rebeca Powell, the release of the Cooktown Events Centre Masterplan, and a Citizenship Ceremony, where Cook Shire formally welcomed 11 new Australians.
