COUNCIL ISSUES FAKE PHONE CALLS WARNING
Cook Shire Council is warning residents to be careful when receiving phone calls that claim to be from or on behalf of the Council.
13 October 2022 - 04:21PM
We have been advised by a member of the community that they have received several phone calls from different numbers claiming to be from Cook Shire Council.
Effective immediately, in order to protect the community, we will no longer be able to initiate phone calls that require credit card payment over the phone.
If you need to make a credit card payment over the phone, you will be asked to contact Council Customer Service Officers on 9402 0500.
Please DO NOT supply your credit card details to anyone claiming to be calling on behalf of the Council if you have not initiated the phone call.
The community is being reminded to please contact Council on 4082 0500 should you have any questions about the validity of any communications from us.
If you receive such a call, please make note of the number that is calling you and report the incident to Scamwatch.
As the type and sophistication of phone and social media scams increases, please also be reminded of the following:
- Council will never send payment reminders or requests for bank details via social media messaging
- Do NOT click on any unexpected/unusual links or attachments
- Please report any suspicious Facebook posts or messages to Scamwatch and the relevant social media platform
