Dog owners encouraged to seize the opportunity to 'Spay the Day'

Cook Shire Council is encouraging all dog owners to Spay the Day, with the final round of its successful desexing program for the 2023-24 financial year scheduled to take place from Tuesday, 30 April until Thursday, 2 May 2024.

Aimed at addressing community concerns about animal management that were identified in the 2023 Community Scorecard Survey results, the free dog-desexing program has already performed over 30 procedures in Cooktown and surrounds. This final round is anticipated to increase numbers to more than 50 successful procedures. 

Recently appointed Cook Shire Mayor Robyn Holmes expressed her support for the program, stating, "The program is a proactive step towards creating a safer and more responsible pet ownership environment in Cook Shire."

Cr Holmes also emphasised that with budget planning for the next financial year underway, this will be the final opportunity for residents to avail themselves of this service until next year’s budget is finalised: “This is why we’re encouraging dog owners to seize this opportunity – Spay the Day – and get their dogs desexed.” 

Desexing plays a vital role in preventing unwanted litters and reducing the reliance on traditional and costly strategies such as collecting, holding, and euthanising pets.

“Reducing unwanted litters means fewer dogs on the streets. This has proven repeatedly to reduce the likelihood of dog attacks on humans, other pets, and native wildlife. The reality is that desexing does save lives,” said Cook Shire’s Compliance Officer, Kylie McAllister.

Ensuring the highest standards of care for all participating pets Doctor Justin Little of Central Veterinary Surgery will again be performing the procedures.
