Stage 6 of the Revitalisation of Charlotte Street, the upgrade works to Cooktown’s Sherrin Esplanade, are due for completion in the coming weeks, with the road anticipated to be open in September.

“Enhanced amenity and access have been key considerations for this project. Council teams have worked with the Bowls Club, the Cooktown RSL and their suppliers to ensure the upgrade works provide more parking and safer access for pedestrians and vehicles,” said Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott.

“That stretch of road has always made for a sensational sunset stroll,” added Mayor Scott. “The installation of a shared pathway along the waterfront not only provides greater connectivity through the town, but it also makes the area much safer for walkers, runners and cyclists.”

The works have included many enhancements designed to improve access and safety and provide additional parking, including:

  • Installation of a shared pathway for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Installation of street lights and protective barriers/bollards
  • Installation of road signage and line markings
  • Culverts and rock protection installation
  • Subsoil drainages
  • Kerb and channel, kerb pits, drainage pits and open table drain
  • Road pavement and bitumen sealing
To facilitate the upgrade, Sherrin Esplanade will reopen as a one-way single lane of traffic (from north to south). Vehicles will only be able to access the road from Charlotte Street (near Bicentennial Park) and travel one-way southbound towards the Furneaux Street-Adelaide Street intersection.

The community is being advised to be aware of these changed traffic conditions, plan their trip accordingly and pay attention to signs.

This project is jointly funded by the Australian Government's Roads to Recovery Program (contributing $420,000) and the Queensland Government's Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS).
