Unity and Support for Cook Shire in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Jasper

With the holiday season upon us, our hearts are with our community who are navigating challenges in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Jasper, and we extend a message of unity by shedding light on the ongoing efforts to support and connect with community members who remain isolated in Ayton and Bloomfield.

With the holiday season upon us, our hearts are with our community who are navigating challenges in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Jasper, and we extend a message of unity by shedding light on the ongoing efforts to support and connect with community members who remain isolated in Ayton and Bloomfield.

The recent trials faced by our community and the neighbouring community at Wujal Wujal, have been substantial, yet in the spirit of Christmas, we find strength in unity and perseverance. Support initiatives have been steadfast since Topical Cyclone Jasper, and we are committed to reinforcing our assistance to connecting out community, and then rebuilding lives and homes.

"At this critical juncture, Council remains deeply engaged in a two-phase operation. The first phase involves the ongoing emergency and disaster response in Wujal Wujal, Ayton and Bloomfield,” explained Brian Joiner, CEO Cook Shire Council and Local Coordinator, Cook Local Disaster Management Group. “Immediate relief efforts, including the provision of essential supplies and crucial services, remain our priority as we navigate through this phase."

"Simultaneously, we are steering our efforts towards the second phase—recovery response. Our focus extends beyond immediate relief to encompass economic recovery, mental health support, and the sustainable rebuilding of our community. This phase emphasises our commitment to not just restore but to revitalise our community for a resilient future."

Immediate Relief Initiatives: From the outset, response teams have worked tirelessly, providing vital supplies, emergency shelter, and healthcare services to those affected.

Collaboration and Assistance: Our collaboration with local authorities and neighbouring Wujal Wujal and Douglas Shire councils remains robust, ensuring a coordinated approach in addressing immediate needs and laying foundations for long-term recovery.

The path to recovery may be arduous, but the Christmas season is a reminder of the hope and resilience inherent in our community. As we move forward, Council is committed to providing:

Transparent Engagement: Establishing open channels of communication to address concerns directly and ensure transparency in our actions.

Sustainable Rebuilding: Continuing efforts to rebuild with sustainability in mind, creating a resilient future for our community.

During this festive season, we encourage unity, compassion, and support for one another. Let us embrace the Christmas spirit by extending kindness and understanding to those in need, ensuring that no one feels alone in their journey toward recovery.

Community members requiring assistance are reminded to call 000 if you feel your life is in danger.
