Cook Shire Council is delighted to announce the recipients of the Australia Day Awards for 2024, recognising outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to our community across various fields.

Cook Shire Council is delighted to announce the recipients of the Australia Day Awards for 2024, recognising outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to our community across various fields.
"These outstanding individuals exemplify the spirit of community and service. Their contributions have made a lasting impact, and we are proud to honour them with Australia Day Awards," said Cook Shire Mayor, Councillor Peter Scott.
Citizen of the Year: Julie Oliver
Cook Shire Council is proud to award the prestigious Citizen of the Year to Julie Oliver. Julie's tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to the community embody the spirit of this award. As a committee member of Sunbird Cottage, President of Cooktown RSL sub-branch, RSL Advocate for Community Advisory Network, and Curator of the ANZAC cemetery, Julie has dedicated her life to serving others. With a remarkable 21 years of service in the Army Reserve, 10 years as a school teacher, and a full-time carer for her husband Peter, Julie's impact on our community is immeasurable. We salute her for her good nature, kind heart, and the lasting contribution she makes towards our community.

Young Citizen of the Year: Lucas Giese
Lucas Giese is recognised as the Young Citizen of the Year for his exceptional commitment to community service, sportsmanship, and youth engagement. A 16-year-old student at Cooktown State School, Lucas serves as the School Sports Captain, inspiring his peers to actively participate in sports and school activities. His dedication extends beyond the school, with involvement in the Cook Shire Youth Council and coaching junior rugby league. Lucas's passion for the environment, as showcased in the Cape York Young Reef Leaders program, positions him as a remarkable role model for the youth of Cooktown.

Volunteers of the Year: John and Tanya Ahlers
John and Tanya Ahlers are celebrated as the Volunteers of the Year for their unwavering commitment to the Lakeland SES and as Queensland Ambulance Service First Responders. For almost two decades, John and Tanya have played a crucial role in the organisations success, attending training sessions, responding to emergencies, and supporting the community with dedication and skill. Their exemplary service exemplifies the selflessness and community spirit that defines the Cook Shire.

Sports Award: Don Wood
Don Wood, a quiet achiever in our sporting community, is recognised with the Sports Award for his outstanding achievements in horse archery. Representing Australia at the IHAA World Championships in Mongolia and placing third at the Australian Horse Archery Championships, Don's dedication to his sport highlights the spirit of determination and excellence that we celebrate across our region.
Arts and Culture Award: Jane Dennis
Jane Dennis receives the Arts and Culture Award for her transformative work with the Cooktown School of Art Society and the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery, including the mural and the Cooktown Archies program. Jane's commitment to the arts enriches the cultural fabric of Cooktown.

Environment Award: Denicka Danaher
Denicka Danaher is honoured with the Environment Award for her significant contribution to environmental conservation in the Cape York Peninsula. Organizing the largest hog hunt in the region, Denicka has not only controlled the feral pig population but also raised awareness and funds for local conservation efforts. Her passion and dedication make her a deserving recipient of this award.
