Enhanced Accessibility at William Daku Park with New Wheelchair-Friendly Picnic Tables
Cook Shire Council is excited to announce a significant enhancement to the accessibility and aesthetics of William Daku Park with the installation of two brand-new timber-look aluminium picnic tables, designed to accommodate wheelchair users.

The decision to replace the original weathered timber picnic tables stemmed from their inability to withstand the elements effectively. After thorough consideration, the Council opted for the introduction of wheelchair-friendly picnic tables, ensuring inclusivity for all park visitors.
Costing $7,628 for materials, with additional expenses for freight and installation covered by the council's operational budget, these tables represent a worthwhile investment in the community's recreational facilities.
The new picnic tables feature an extended end to facilitate wheelchair access, aligning with the timber-look aluminium bench seats installed in the park previously. Not only do these additions improve accessibility, but they also maintain a cohesive aesthetic throughout the park.
Regarding future plans for accessibility improvements, the Council remains open to further enhancements in other areas within Cook Shire, subject to available funds. While no specific projects have been outlined yet, the potential for similar upgrades underscores the Council's ongoing commitment to accessibility and community engagement.
In selecting the specific locations within William Daku Park for the installation of these new picnic tables, accessibility and existing infrastructure played crucial roles. The chosen spots not only provide easy access for wheelchair users but also address the deteriorating condition of the previous timber furniture, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience for all park-goers.
The Cook Shire Council encourages residents and visitors alike to enjoy the enhanced amenities at William Daku Park and looks forward to continuing efforts to create inclusive spaces throughout the community.
