In response to the ongoing challenges faced by our community following the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Jasper, Cook Shire Council announces the implementation of the TC Jasper and Associated Rainfall and Flooding Policy. The policy was adopted at the February Ordinary Council meeting held earlier this week, with the initiative aiming to provide crucial support to property owners grappling with financial hardship due to the devastating impacts of the cyclone and associated weather events in December 2023.
Mayor Peter Scott emphasised the significance of this initiative, stating, "The effects of Tropical Cyclone Jasper and the subsequent rainfall and flooding continue to reverberate throughout our community. As a Council, it is our duty to stand with our residents during these difficult times and offer assistance wherever possible."
With more than 150 Cook Shire residences impacted by the floods following TC Jasper, Council's Rates Relief initiative aims to help ease the financial strain on those who have been hit hardest.
The TC Jasper Policy underscores the Council's commitment to ensuring that those most affected receive the support they need to recover and rebuild. Mayor Scott added, "We understand the challenges our community members are facing, and this policy reflects our dedication to alleviating some of the financial burdens incurred as a result of the cyclone."
Under the provisions of the policy, eligible property owners may apply for assistance, which may include the freezing of interest for up to 12 (twelve) months and/or deferment of rates payment for up to 12 (twelve) months. Mayor Scott emphasised that this assistance is designed to provide relief without compromising the Council's responsibility for debt recovery.
"Our priority is the well-being of our community," Mayor Scott reiterated. "By offering this support, we hope to ease the financial strain on those who have been hit hardest by the cyclone and associated weather events."
The TC Jasper and Associated Rainfall and Flooding Policy stands as a testament to Cook Shire Council's unwavering commitment to its residents. Mayor Scott concluded, "Together, we will navigate through these challenging times, and Cook Shire Council remains steadfast in our dedication to supporting our community every step of the way."
