Cook Shire Council has launched its new self-serve water stations in Cooktown and Coen.

The bright royal blue stations are easy to spot, simple to use, and will make it easier for businesses, residents, and visitors to access clean drinking water.

Mayor Robyn Holmes said, “These new water stations provide a practical and fair way for everyone, especially visitors, to easily access clean drinking water.”

The new water stations are especially convenient for tourists and visitors, allowing one-time purchases with a credit or debit card. The cost of water is $4.40 per 1,000 litres in Cooktown and $8.80 per 1,000 litres in Coen. These fees are outlined in Council’s Fees and Charges.

The Cooktown royal blue water stations will run alongside the current Avdata fob/key system until 28 April 2025. After this date the Avdata system will be deactivated and the bulk water station on Charlotte Street in Cooktown (outside the SES building will close). Customers who have a fob (key) for the old system are asked to please return your fob to Council’s Customer Service.

The Coen system will be up and running at the end of April 2025.

Using the new water stations

  • Payment: Use your credit or debit card. There’s no need to set up an account.  Accounts can be set up businesses if required.
  • Hose: Bring your own hose. The units support two connection sizes: 25mm hose fitting and 80mm camlock fitting. Ensure your hose fits one of these sizes.  Please bring your own hose and hose fittings.
