SWIMMING POOLS
AND SPAS
Ensuring pool safety throughout our Shire
At Cook Shire Council, we take pool compliance and safety seriously and address concerns brought to our attention.
Responsibilities and Compliance
The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) oversees pool safety matters, including:
- Licensing of pool safety inspectors
- Compliance with pool safety laws
- Handling disciplinary functions
- Pool Registration and Compliance
If you own a pool, here’s what you need to know:
Definition of a pool
Any structure capable of holding water to a depth of 300mm, with a volume of 2000L or more, and/or equipped with a filtration system
Requirements
If your pool meets one of more of the above criteria, it is a swimming pool, therefore you need to:
- Obtain building approval before installation
- Obtain a Pool Safety Certificate from a licensed certifier before filling the pool
- Ensure your pool is registered on the pool safety register
Pool Safety Certificates
- All pools require a current Pool Safety Certificate issued by a licensed certifier
- It’s the responsibility of property owners to ensure compliance with safety standards
- Tenants with pool fences must keep gates closed and maintain barrier effectiveness
Checking and Obtaining Certificate
Check if your pool is registered or has a current Pool Safety Certificate on the QBCC’s Pool Safety Register.
Cook Shire Council offers pool safety inspections if your pool lacks a current certificate.
Contact Council if you would like to arrange an inspection
