RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP

Pets and domestic animals can be much-loved members of your household but can also be the cause of unhappy neighbourhoods. As an animal owner you are responsible for caring for your pets and ensuring you comply with relevant Local Laws. This section provides information on responsible pet ownership and what you can do if you have a complaint.

Full details of State and Council rules governing pet ownership are available in:

Local Law No 2 (Animal Management)
Subordinate Local Law No 2 (Animal Management)
Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008
Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Regulation 2019

Dogs in public places

Ensuring your dog remains under effective control while in public areas is essential for the safety and comfort of all.

Here are some guidelines to follow:

Leash Requirement:
All dogs must be walked on a leash while in public. This ensures they remain under control at all times.

Effective Control Definition:
“Effective control” means that someone capable of restraining the dog under any circumstances is holding it with a suitable leash.

Prohibited Areas:
• Dogs are prohibited from specific public spaces, including:
• Areas within 10 meters of food preparation or consumption zones, except outdoor dining areas of cafes or restaurants that permit dogs.
• Designated recreation areas and public bathing zones.
• School grounds and childcare centers.
• Places of business where dogs are not allowed.
• Wildlife protection areas and national parks (refer to the provided link for detailed information).
• Owners or individuals in charge of dogs not under effective control may face on-the-spot fines. The same penalties apply for dogs found in prohibited areas.

Cleanup Responsibility:
Promptly cleaning up after your dog is essential. If your dog defecates in a public area, you must immediately remove the waste and dispose of it properly. Many stores offer products and bags for convenient waste removal.
Failure to clean up after your dog may result in an on-the-spot fine issued to the owner or person in charge of the dog.
