Nurturing Our Future

The Cook Shire Council is dedicated to sustainability. From reducing plastic waste to safeguarding water resources and protecting our precious ecosystems, we’re committed to creating a resilient and sustainable future for our community and the environment.

Reef Guardian Council

Reef Guardian Council Program, is a stewardship program that encourages and supports councils, schools and industries to become actively involved in protecting the Great Barrier Reef.

The Cook Shire Council Reef Guardian Council Action Plan 2024-28 records the diversity of Council actions and projects that contribute to Reef health. It aligns with Queensland and Australian Government objectives to improve the long-term outlook for the Reef.

The Action Plan is a powerful tool for the Council to share its Reef management actions with the local community – and the rest of the world.

The Reef Guardian Council program recognises the good environmental work councils are achieving throughout the 42 million hectare Reef catchment.

As proud members of the Reef Guardian Council, we’re dedicated to protecting the Great Barrier Reef. Our commitment involves proactive measures to preserve this natural wonder, advocating for its health, and encouraging sustainable practices that support its longevity.

    Solar Power

Did you know that Australia has the highest average solar radiation per square metre of any continent in the world? Yet, despite this, Australia lags behind global leaders in harnessing this eco-friendly energy source.

North Queensland holds massive untapped potential to convert our buildings into green power hubs. This isn’t just about sustainability; it’s a chance to fuel our local economy, creating jobs while ensuring clean, dependable energy at remarkably low costs.

At Cook Shire Council, we’re committed to seizing this solar advantage. Our mission? To transform our region into a beacon of sustainable progress. Join us as we harness the sun’s energy, reducing our carbon footprint and empowering our community through innovative, cost-effective solutions.

Recent solar powered projects Council has delivered include:

    • Solar powered street lights in Coen
    • Installation of solar panels at Council’s Main Administration Building in Cooktown
    • Ground mounted solar system installed at Annan Water Treatment Plant
    • Installation of 20kW solar panels at Cooktown Swimming Pool
      Minimising Waste & Recycling

We are working towards championing a circular economy where waste becomes a resource. Through innovative waste management strategies, we’re committed to reducing landfill waste and increasing recycling rates. Join us in our mission to create a cleaner, greener Cook Shire for generations to come.

Water is life, and ensuring its sustainability is paramount.
