MEDIA RELEASE | Real stories of resilience and reconciliation set to light up the Cooktown Shire Hall

In celebration of National Reconciliation Week 2025, Cook Shire Council is proud to present a special Film Festival showcasing powerful First Nations storytelling on the big screen at Cooktown’s iconic Shire Hall.

Running from Monday 26 May to Saturday 31 May, the three-evening event features a curated selection of landmark Indigenous films — each a compelling exploration of truth, identity, and the ongoing journey of reconciliation.

This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, “Bridging Now to Next,” is a call to action — reminding us that the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must continue with strength and unity. Hosting a film screening is a meaningful way to bring people together, deepen understanding, and help build the bridges from now to next.

Festival line-up

Araatika! Rise Up – Monday 26 May

Kick off the festival with this rousing documentary following NRL legend Dean Widders and his campaign to incorporate First Nations culture into pre-game rituals. A timely screening ahead of the first State of Origin clash for 2025 on 28 May.

Servant or Slave – Thursday 29 May

A powerful documentary sharing the untold stories of five Aboriginal women who endured government-sanctioned servitude. This film sheds light on the policies that shaped generations of trauma — and survival.

The Sapphires – Saturday 31 May

End the week on a high with this uplifting, family-friendly crowd favourite based on the true story of four young Aboriginal women who took their music — and message — to the world. Full of humour, soul and spirit.

Each screening starts at 6:30 pm (doors open at 6:00 pm) at Cooktown Shire Hall. BYO snacks, drinks, pillows or beanbags — make yourself comfortable and settle in for an evening of storytelling and connection. Keep an eye out for a few local cinematic surprises throughout the week, celebrating local stories of connection, Country and culture.

A COMMUNITY CELEBRATION OF CULTURE AND CONNECTION

“Hosting a film screening during National Reconciliation Week is about more than entertainment,” said Mayor Robyn Holmes. “It’s an opportunity to reflect, to learn, and to come together around stories that help shape our understanding of one another and the Australia we want to build — together.”

Cook Shire and Cape York are home to a unique and vibrant blend of peoples, cultures, and communities — each with their own stories, strengths and contributions. This Film Festival honours our region’s rich diversity and supports our shared reconciliation journey, built on truth-telling, respect, and pride in our place and each other.

All screenings are free, but spaces are strictly limited so bookings are essential. For more information and bookings, visit www.cook.qld.gov.au/nrwfilms
