Cook Shire Council is pleased to announce that the John Street Oval lighting upgrade project is set to commence in the coming days, delivering long-term improvements to safety, maintenance, and community amenity.
Originally installed in 2010, the existing lights are being replaced to allow easier and safer access for future globe changes. The upgrade forms part of Council’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality recreational infrastructure for local sporting groups and the wider community.
Works are scheduled to begin from Wednesday 17 June, with crane contractors mobilising on-site—weather permitting. The lighting towers will be safely removed and replaced with new poles in the coming weeks.
What to Expect
- Minimal disruption to the public.
- Safe work zones and signage in place during crane operation.
- Improved infrastructure designed to support long-term community use.
Community sporting groups who regularly use the John Street Oval have been duly informed, and Council is working closely with all stakeholders to ensure the upgrade runs smoothly and efficiently.
This lighting upgrade marks another step in supporting active lifestyles and creating safe, well-maintained spaces for Cooktown’s sporting community to thrive.
Stay tuned for more updates once the new lights are in place!
