Cook Shire Council is inviting tenders for the purchase of four parcels of undeveloped freehold land within Cooktown, signalling a proactive step toward encouraging economic development, residential growth, and community revitalisation.
The land, located on Boundary Street and Walker Street, includes three generously sized lots zoned Low Density Residential (800m² each) and one smaller lot zoned Centre, positioned for business or commercial use right in the heart of Cooktown.
Mayor Robyn Holmes said the land release was a strategic move designed to support the future growth of the town by making underutilised Council-owned land available to residents, investors, and businesses.
“Releasing these parcels for sale is part of Council’s broader approach to unlocking value from our assets while creating real opportunities for community and economic development,” Mayor Holmes said.
“Whether it’s a first home builder looking for an affordable block, an investor ready to expand, or a small business owner dreaming of a central shopfront—these blocks open doors.”
The three Boundary Street lots are within walking distance to schools, the community pool, Cooktown Events Centre and the hospital and are ideal for new homes or low-density housing projects that align with Cooktown’s residential character. Meanwhile, the Walker Street lot, with its highly sought-after Centre zoning, offers a prime opportunity for a wide range of commercial or professional uses—ideally located just off Cooktown’s bustling main street. Whether for a new venture or an established business, local or otherwise, this versatile property provides the flexibility and visibility to support a variety of uses and business goals.
“We want to see these blocks developed—not sitting vacant. This is about supporting growth that suits our community’s needs while reinforcing Cooktown’s vibrancy as both a place to live and a place to do business,” Mayor Holmes said.
The tender process is open and competitive, but Council is not obligated to accept the highest offer. Submissions will be assessed on merit and in accordance with the Local Government Regulation 2012.
Tenders must be submitted electronically via Vendor Panel by 2pm, Wednesday 30 July 2025.
