Cook Shire Council is helping spread the word on behalf of Citrus Australia, who are calling for volunteers to join the Citrus Watch program and help protect the future of our citrus industry.
Citrus Watch is a national early warning system looking out for the Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP) – a tiny pest that poses a big risk to citrus trees and could threaten crops across the country if left unchecked.
How you can help:
It’s easy to get involved! Volunteers are provided with sticky insect traps and asked to place them in an ACP host plant such as a citrus tree, curry leaf plant, or Murraya paniculata (orange jasmine). After two weeks, simply remove the trap and post it back using the pre-paid envelope provided. Entomologists in Darwin will then analyse the samples as part of national surveillance efforts.
Citrus Australia will provide everything you need, including:
- Sticky traps
- Easy-to-follow instructions
- Pre-paid return envelopes
Whether you’re a backyard grower or simply want to support biosecurity in your region, your small action can make a big difference.
