Cook Shire Council is inviting residents, community groups, and local stakeholders to have their say in renaming three streets in the Cooktown and Marton areas.
The streets identified for renaming are:
- John Street, Cooktown
- Brown Street, Cooktown
- Ida Street, Marton
These streets are being renamed due to duplications of existing names within the region, which can create confusion for emergency services, deliveries, and navigation systems. Unique street names are critical for ensuring public safety and service efficiency across the Shire.
Council is calling on the community to put forward meaningful and appropriate name suggestions that reflect local history, culture, geography, flora, fauna, or people and groups who have made a lasting contribution to the area.
Submissions can be made through a simple online form, and all valid entries will be reviewed in line with Council’s Naming of Road Assets Policy and Procedure. The final decision on the new names will be made at an upcoming Ordinary Council Meeting, with outcomes to be announced via Council’s communication channels.
