Cooktown State School year 7 students explore local Government in action

Cook Shire Council welcomed a group of Year 7 students from Cooktown State School on Friday 1 August, for an engaging and hands-on introduction to local government.

The visit gave students the opportunity to learn how Council works, what it’s responsible for, how decisions are made, and how ideas from the community are turned into real-world actions. It also offered a chance to explore the wide range of careers available in local government—from engineering and planning to community development, libraries, parks, and more.

The group arrived at around 9:45 AM and began with a guided tour of Council offices, before heading into the Council Chambers for a series of presentations delivered by Council staff. The morning wrapped up with a mock Council Meeting, where students stepped into the shoes of Councillors to debate and vote on a fictional motion—bringing their learning to life in a fun and memorable way.

Earlier in the week, Mayor Cr Robyn Holmes and Deputy Mayor Cr Ross Logan visited Cooktown State School to present the prize from the recent Cooktown Careers Expo giveaway. The lucky winner received a Boom 4 speaker, drawn from students who took part in the “Find Your Future Fit at Council?” quiz during the event.

Cook Shire Council is proud to support initiatives that connect young people with local government and open doors to future opportunities in their own community.
