Families, friends and beachgoers are invited to celebrate the arrival of spring and the weekend before Father’s Day in spectacular style at Sand & Sky: A Day at Finch Bay on Saturday 6 September from 2PM to 5PM.
Hosted by Cook Shire Council, this free community event will transform Finch Bay Beach into a vibrant celebration of wind, wonder and coastline. The afternoon will feature giant kite installations up to 30 metres long from Kites Queensland, a sand sculpture competition, beach games, and plenty of space to kick back and soak up the sea breeze in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
Attendees are welcome to bring their own kites, beach mats and picnic baskets, or enjoy the offerings of a local fundraising BBQ (community group to be announced).
Free courtesy buses will run between the Cooktown Botanic Gardens Car Park and Finch Bay Car Park throughout the afternoon, making access a breeze.
“Sand & Sky is a beautiful new event that celebrates the very best of Cooktown—our stunning coastline, our creative community, and of course, our famed Cooktown wind,” said Cook Shire Mayor Robyn Holmes. “It’s the perfect way to welcome spring and spend quality time with family the day before Father’s Day.”
To extend the fun, a free kite-making workshop will also be held at the Yarning Circle in Cooktown Botanic Gardens from 9AM–11AM on the morning of the event. Bookings can be made at trybooking.com/DEGYY.
Please note: Finch Bay is not suitable for swimming due to the presence of crocodiles and stingers.
