Clarification Regarding Residential Activation Fund and Development in Cooktown

Media Statement announcement tile

Cook Shire Council wishes to clarify recent reporting which incorrectly stated that Council has received government funding to drive new residential development in Cooktown.

This is not the case. The Queensland Government has announced funding under its Residential Activation Fund, which includes $1.1 million for the Gigers Residential Subdivision in Cooktown. Importantly, this funding has been awarded to a private developer to support essential infrastructure such as water, sewer, stormwater networks, new roads, and utility installations.

Council is not the recipient of this funding and is not delivering this project.

Council’s role in this matter is limited to its statutory responsibility as the local planning authority. On 22 February 2022, Council approved Development Application DA/4310 – Reconfiguration of a Lot. This approval allowed the private developer to progress their subdivision proposal.

Further information on DA/4310, including the approval details and conditions, is publicly available on Council’s website:

Cook Shire Council is committed to supporting sustainable growth and facilitating housing opportunities through proper planning and assessment processes. However, it is essential that the community understands the distinction between Council-led initiatives and private sector developments.
