New equipment boosts Coen and Lakeland SES operations

Cook Shire’s State Emergency Service (SES) units in Coen and Lakeland have recently received significant equipment upgrades, strengthening their ability to respond to emergencies and support their communities when it matters most.

The upgrades reflect the strong partnership between local government and volunteer emergency services, and a shared commitment to enhancing safety and resilience across Cape York.

Coen SES: Purpose-Built Canopy Enhances Remote Response

The Coen SES has proudly taken delivery of a new, purpose-built canopy that significantly improves operational readiness in remote environments. Designed in close consultation with the local SES team, the canopy includes features such as secure storage, drawers, and refrigeration, ensuring crews are well-equipped to assist the community during callouts in challenging and isolated locations.

Lakeland SES: First Response Vehicle Ready for Action

In Lakeland, the SES team has recently welcomed a new first response vehicle that is already operational and has been deployed to its first job. Built to suit the region’s unique needs, the vehicle is fitted to support a wide range of tasks, including road crash rescues, medical assists, and general emergency response.

The handover was attended by local SES members and a representative from Cook Shire Council, reflecting the close and collaborative relationship between Council and the dedicated volunteers who serve the Lakeland community.

Supporting Local Response Through Collaboration

Both the new canopy for Coen and the first response vehicle for Lakeland were jointly funded through the SES Support Grant 2024–25 and Cook Shire Council. These projects are shining examples of how local governments can work directly with emergency services to deliver tailored, fit-for-purpose solutions that improve response capabilities and support community resilience.

Cook Shire Council extends its sincere thanks to the SES volunteers for their continued service and is proud to support the delivery of critical resources that help protect and serve the people of Cape York.
