The recent school holiday event in Laura provided a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy a fun family day, and learn about the importance of disaster preparedness ahead of the upcoming season.
Delivered by Cook Shire Council in partnership with Get Ready Week QLD, the Sport and Rec and Events teams, the event offered something for everyone. Children were entertained by “Crazy Bron” with a kids’ disco bubble party, face painting, and a lolly scramble. Attendees also took part in a colourful school oval colour run, with the Rural Fire Brigade hosing down participants to add to the excitement.
The day featured a BBQ dinner with fresh salads prepared by the Peninsula Hotel, and several prizes were raffled for attendees. While live musician Patrick Nandy was unable to attend, the event was still filled with laughter, music, and community spirit.
In addition to Council staff, the event was supported by CDCC staff, Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service staff, and the Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade, who helped run the colour run. Many parents and guardians also joined in the fun, making it a truly inclusive community celebration.
Cook Shire Council thanks everyone who participated and helped make the event a memorable day for families, while also promoting the importance of being prepared for the disaster season ahead.
