The Cooktown waterfront came alive these school holidays as 63 enthusiastic young anglers, aged 8 to 17, cast their lines in the first-ever Blue Lures Fishing Event – a joint initiative between Cook Shire Council, Queensland Police, and the Blue Light Foundation.
The day was all about fun, fishing, and community connection. Participants enjoyed games, giveaways, and plenty of friendly competition, with trophies, vouchers, and prizes up for grabs. Thanks to the generosity of The Lure Shop – Tackle World Cooktown, Anaconda, Bektopia, Tweed Bait, and Cook Shire Council, every young angler went home with a smile.
There were some memorable moments on the water – including a 96cm Queenfish, the biggest catch of the day, followed closely by a 71cm barramundi that drew cheers from the crowd. Other catches included mackerel, cod, and even a curious remora, proving that Cooktown’s waters never disappoint. Four young anglers were recognised for their efforts, with three major prizes and an encouragement award presented.
Behind the scenes, Council’s Events team worked closely with the Cooktown Police and community partners including the Cape York Family Centre and Gungarde Aboriginal Corporation to make the day a true community celebration. Police officers joined in the fun, helping kids with their rigs, cheering on the catches, and connecting with families throughout the event.
Ultimately, Blue Lures was about more than just fishing – it was about strengthening positive relationships between young people, police, and the wider community. Judging by the laughter, excitement, and proud smiles along the waterfront, the inaugural event was a resounding success.
Cook Shire Council extends its sincere thanks to Sergeant Regan O’Hara, the Cooktown Police, and all community partners, sponsors, and volunteers who made the event possible. We look forward to working together again to make next year’s Blue Lures even bigger and better.
