Council taking action on Community Safety

Cook Shire Council has secured $400,000 in funding under the Queensland Government’s Secure Communities Partnership Program to deliver the Cooktown Waterfront CCTV Safety Network Initiative.

This major investment will expand and upgrade CCTV coverage along the Cooktown waterfront precinct — improving visibility, deterring antisocial behaviour, and enhancing community safety for residents, visitors, and local businesses.

The project directly supports one of the community’s key priorities identified through Council’s 2025 Community Scorecard and addressed in the 2025–27 Community Scorecard Action Plan — improving safety and crime prevention across the Shire.

Council’s Action Plan includes a range of initiatives aimed at fostering safer, more connected communities, from youth engagement programs and community events to partnerships that strengthen local security and resilience.

The funding reinforces Council’s commitment to taking practical, proactive steps in response to community feedback and delivering outcomes that make Cooktown and the wider Shire safer and more welcoming places to live and visit.
