Cooktown businesses connect for growth of the region

Cooktown’s business community showed strong interest in the town’s growth and development at last week’s Business Networking Function, hosted by Cook Shire Council in partnership.

The event drew around 70 attendees, representing a wide range of local businesses and industries, all eager to learn more about the major projects set to shape Cooktown’s economic future.

Hospital redevelopment update

TCHHS representatives Nicholas Delaney and Manu John provided an update on the Cooktown Multipurpose Health Service redevelopment, sharing insights into the scale and scope of the project.

They noted an estimated workforce of around 80 people will be required on site at any given time, highlighting that accommodating and supporting this workforce will be crucial to the project’s success.

TCHHS emphasised their desire to work closely with the local community and businesses to deliver the new hospital, strengthening local partnerships along the way.

While the Registrations of Interest (ROI) for workers’ accommodation and for construction contractors and suppliers have now closed, TCHHS encouraged anyone interested in future opportunities to stay informed through the Queensland Government’s QTenders platform.

New IGA development to expand town centre offering

Graeme Cornett, owner of Cooktown’s IGA, shared an update on the new IGA development, which was recently approved by Council.

The project is set to deliver a significant increase in shop floor space and back-of-house storage, along with three additional retail-style tenancies—a major boost to Cooktown’s commercial hub.

Mr Cornett also announced plans to commence works as early as April 2026, weather permitting.

Both presenters also encouraged local businesses to actively seek opportunities to get involved, build relationships, and position themselves to benefit from the projects and the economic activity they will generate.

Looking ahead to broader opportunities

The event also highlighted business opportunities linked to Brisbane 2032, and encouraged local businesses to register their interest to receive information about becoming a supplier or contractor for the upcoming 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Collaboration and optimism

Cook Shire Council thanks all presenters and attendees for contributing to a successful event, which reinforced the importance of collaboration, connection, and forward planning as Cooktown continues to grow.
