Council adopts 2024–25 Annual Report

At its Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 25 November 2025, Cook Shire Council formally adopted its 2024–25 Annual Report, outlining Council’s performance, achievements, and financial position for the 2024–25 financial year.

The Annual Report highlights strong progress across infrastructure, community engagement, environmental recovery, organisational capability, and financial sustainability—reflecting Council’s ongoing commitment to delivering essential services and strengthening liveability across the Shire.

Key Highlights from 2024–25

  • Major recovery and reconstruction works continued under the DRFA program, including the removal of more than 1,700 tonnes of debris from flood-affected areas following Tropical Cyclone Jasper.
  • The Cooktown Discovery Festival 2025 delivered record attendance and strong economic benefits, boosting accommodation bookings, local trade, and tourism spending across the community.
  • Launch of Council’s new website in October 2024, improving transparency, accessibility, and online service delivery for residents and visitors.
  • Continued delivery of key community infrastructure, including the restoration of the Town Well Fountain, new amenities at Weary Bay, and progress on the John Street Oval lighting upgrade.
  • Ongoing environmental leadership through the Reef Guardian Council Action Plan, Perfume Gully rehabilitation, and the region-wide Pet Desexing Program across Cooktown, Laura and Coen.

Financial Performance

As noted in the Community Financial Report (pages 17–18):

  • Operating revenue: $121.86 million
  • Operating expenses: $120.41 million
  • Operating position: $1.45 million

Once capital income is added, and capital expenditure and depreciation are accounted for, Council achieved a bottom-line net result of $7.1 million — a $20 million turnaround from the previous financial year, reflecting improved financial management, strong grant performance, and continued investment in essential infrastructure and services.
