Free sandbags are now available to residents in Cooktown, Ayton, Rossville, Bloomfield and Helenvale as a low-pressure system off the coast continues to bring rainfall across the region.
The system is currently producing showers and periods of rain, with further rainfall and possible thunderstorms expected over the coming days.
To assist residents during the current wet conditions, sandbagging stations have been established at two locations.
Cooktown residents can collect and fill their own sandbags at the Cooktown SES headquarters on Charlotte Street from today, Thursday 5 March 2026.
Ayton, Bloomfield and Rossville residents are advised that fill-your-own sandbags are now available at the Ayton Wharf, with bags available on sight.
Residents are encouraged to take practical steps to protect their properties where necessary and to collect sandbags early if they may be required.
Community members are reminded to stay informed through official sources, including Cook Shire Council’s Disaster Dashboard at disaster.cook.qld.gov.au, and the Bureau of Meteorology for the latest weather updates, and the State Emergency Service Queensland website for storm preparation advice.
For more information, contact Cooktown SES on Charlotte Street or visit the SES website for weather preparation tips.
Council will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as required.
