FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Abukkabag?

Abukkabag is Cook Shire Council’s catchy campaign reminding the community that it only costs $1 to dispose of a single bag (up to 60L) of general household rubbish at any of our Waste Transfer Stations (during their normal operating hours).

Is this a new or limited-time offer?

No — the $1 per bag rate has been in place since June 2024. This campaign is about raising awareness and helping more people make use of it.

What kind of waste can I dispose of for $1 per bag?

Only general household rubbish — like kitchen & bathroom waste, packaging, fish frames, prawn heads, and general ‘trash’ generated from your day-to-day household activites. If you wouldn’t normally put it in your kitchen or bathroom bin, then it’s not household waste.

🛑 No green waste, furniture, recyclables, construction debris, or commercial loads.

Can I use a smaller bag (e.g. 30L or 40L) and pay less?

No — the $1 fee applies to any bag up to 60L. Smaller bags are still $1. No discounts apply.

Can I bring a bigger bag?

No. Bags over 60L are not included in the Abukkabag rate and will be charged as per  standard fees.

How many bags can I dispose of per day?

The $1 rate applies to 1 bag per vehicle, per day. Additional bags or oversized loads will be charged at the usual rates.

When can I use this service?

During regular opening hours at any Council Waste Transfer Station.

Do I need to be a resident?

Not at all!  This service is available to everyone — locals, visitors, workers, tourists, campers and road-trippers alike.

How do I pay?

Payment options may vary by location. Bring small change or call ahead to check your nearest facility’s setup.

Why is Council promoting this now?

Because we recently realised that not enough people know this easy, legal, and cost-effective option exists. Abukkabag helps reduce illegal dumping and littering, supports our community, and keeps the Shire and the Cape looking their best.
