Cook Shire Council has partnered with the Queensland Police Service (QPS) to enhance community safety and security with the installation of closed-circuit television cameras at three high-traffic locations in Cooktown.
23 November 2020 – 01:52PM
unded by the Australian Government’s Safer Communities Fund grant program, the Cooktown CCTV system will only be used for policing purposes and aims to reduce crime levels by deterring potential offenders; ensuring higher levels of community safety and assisting in the investigation and prosecution of offenders.
“CCTV is a crucial investigative tool which is often an invaluable source of evidence for police,” said Police Senior Sergeant John McArthur of Cooktown Police who worked with Council to identify the following three locations for the cameras:

- The intersection of Hope St and Racecourse Rd
- Roundabout at Charlotte St, Boundary St and Harrigan Rd
- The intersection of Charlotte St and Racecourse Rd
“Having a proactive response to public health and safety matters is a key strategic priority for Council. Installing the CCTV cameras with the dual purpose of deterring crime and being able to assist the police with evidence collection and prosecution of offenders forms part of this,” said Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott.
In accordance with Queensland and Australian Information Privacy Principles, data from the cameras will be stored on a Council server to be accessed by the QPS during emergency situations and investigations.
