Cook Shire Council resolved at its September 24 Council meeting that Council resume management of the Cooktown Events Centre. This decision will allow Council to adapt the facility to accommodate the growing needs of the community.

Mayor Robyn Holmes highlighted the unique opportunity this presents for Council to meet community needs and increase programming, improve access, and enhance services at the Centre. “This decision reflects Council’s commitment to providing facilities and services that benefit our evolving community. By resuming management of the Cooktown Events Centre, we are well-positioned to create more flexibility in how the facility is used and deliver diverse activities and services that better serve our residents and visitors,” Mayor Holmes said.

The Cooktown Events Centre is also crucial in the region’s disaster management strategy, operating as a hub to support the community during emergencies. By managing the Centre directly, Council enhances its capability to deliver disaster preparedness and response.

โ€œCouncil would like to thank the Queensland Police Citizens Youth Welfare Association (PCYC) for their long term commitment, dedicated service and contributions to our community. We will continue to work closely with PCYC over the coming months as the handover progresses to ensure a smooth transition.โ€

Mayor Holmes acknowledges that since opening in 2011, the Cooktown Events Centre has been a focal point for sports, recreation, and events. Council is committed to ensuring its continued success. โ€œCouncil would like to thank the Queensland Police Citizens Youth Welfare Association (PCYC) for their long term commitment, dedicated service and contributions to our community.
