Council ICT Support helps community stay connected

Cook Shire ICT Team

During yesterday’s unexpected Telstra outage affecting Cooktown and surrounding areas, Cook Shire Council’s ICT team stepped up to ensure vital services could continue across the community. In response to damage to the main fibre line between Cooktown and Lakeland, the ICT team quickly installed units that connect to low-orbit satellite services, restoring internet access to Council’s Main Administration building and Depot. This allowed Council to provide essential customer service support despite the outage.

In a further effort to support the community, Council’s ICT team installed a satellite unit at the Cooktown Library, offering residents free internet access during the disruption. Recognizing the critical nature of connectivity for health and emergency services, Council also loaned a unit to Cooktown Hospital and extended technical support to the Queensland Fire Department, ensuring they could continue their emergency response work uninterrupted.

Cook Shire Council is proud of the ICT team’s swift action and dedication to keeping our community connected during this time.
