Cook Shire Council has been working to improve animal management across the region, and while there’s still more to do, we’ve made some important progress.
Since July 2023, Council has been actively supporting responsible pet ownership, improving services, and helping to address ongoing animal management challenges. Our latest “Did You Know?” video highlights some of the key actions taken so far:
- 84 pets desexed through Council’s free program—helping to reduce unwanted litters.
- 95 pets microchipped, giving more pets a chance to be reunited with their owners.
- 290 animals impounded, working towards safer and more responsible pet ownership.
- A new full-time Local Laws Officer added to strengthen animal management services.
- Four years of secured funding for Coen’s Healthy Dogs program, improving animal welfare in remote communities.
We Heard You – And We’re Taking Action
In the 2023 Community Scorecard Survey, residents told us that animal management was one of the key areas for improvement. We listened – and we’re working hard to enhance our services, enforce responsible pet ownership, and ensure safer communities for everyone.
We know there’s still work to do, and we’re committed to continuing these efforts in partnership with our community.
